ULi launches M1697, reveals product details and shipment targets.

Yesterday, ULi Electronics officially launched its M1697 single-chip solution for the AMD K8 platform. The company started sampling this product in September, and the chip recently entered mass production, ULi associate vice president Bruce Tai said. ULi expects to ship several hundred thousands units of the product in the first quarter of 2006, he added.

Demand For LED Backlighting In Small- To Medium-size Panels Expected To Rise More Than 20% In 2008.
Demand for LED backlighting used in small- to medium-size panels for applications such as low-cost PCs and digital photo frames are expected to increase by 20-30% in 2008, according to industry sources in Taiwan. The cost of LED backlighting in the small- to medium-size segments is currently almost the same as that of cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlighting, according to sources at Taiwan-based LED makers Everlight and Unity Opto.

CMC Magnetics and Ritek, the top two makers of optical discs, have recently started volume production of 15 GB HD-DVD-R SL (high-definition DVD recordable single-sided single-layer) discs and are prepared to begin production of 30 GB HD-DVD-R DL (single-sided double-layer) discs in the fourth quarter of this year at the earliest, according to industry sources.
