KOffice 1.5 released.

The KDE Project today announced the latest version of its open-source office suite. KOffice 1.5 now uses the Oasis Open Document format as the default file format. The majority of the programs directly compete with applications in Microsoft"s Office suite. In addition, the suite has improved accessibility features including mouseless operation and text-to-speech translation. Traditional KOffice applications like the KWord word processor and KSpread spreadsheet programs are still included, but two brand new applications have been added. Kexi is a personal database program that can be compared with Microsoft Access. It can generate single database files and is able to import data from SQL or MS Access. KOffice also includes a beta version of KPlato, which is a free project management/planning applications. KOffice"s source code can be downloaded for free, but Debian, Kubuntu and Suse Linux users may want to download and install the precompiled binary files.

Safari, Firefox Post Market Share Gains Against Internet Explorer.
Chicago (IL) - Recent updates and media buzz surrounding Safari and Firefox apparently helped the two browser to gain market share at the expense of Microsoftò€™s Internet Explorer, according to a new survey released by Net Applications. Appleò€™s and Mozillaò€™s software have been chipping away share from Microsoftò€™s browser for some time now and it appears that Microsoft could use a convincing new browser rather sooner than later.

Osram: Efficiency of LED-BLUs to approach that of CCFL starting in 2007.
Osram anticipates the growing adoption of LEDs as a blacklight unit (BLU) light source due to an anticipated increase in LED efficiency, according to Ludwig Ploetz, application engineering manager (OSRAM Opto Semiconductors GmbH) at Osram, on a 25 May 2006 Taiwan FPD International Conference event.Ploetz expects the efficiency of LED-based BLUs to approach that of cold cathode fluorescent lamp- (CCFL-) BLUs starting in 2007.
